The U.S. Patent Office as a distinct bureau dates from the year 1802. Presided over by the Commissioner of Patents, the Office operates within the Department of Commerce. Established for the purpose of offering protection of inventions or discoveries of any new and useful process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement thereof. The Patent Office is also the repository for publications concerning patents and recorded documents. An estimated 350,000 patent applications are received yearly as well as over 5 million pieces of mail.
The details of issued patents are a matter of public record and can be researched by Inventor, Assignee, Patent Number or Title. Recorded instruments such as Security Agreements or Assignments of All Rights may also be on record under the Number of a Patent or the Parties involved.
